The more than 90 dead and families displaced by heavy rains in Pernambuco led to a wave of voluntary actions to alleviate the tragedy. Among the initiatives, the blockchain ecosystem entered the field to contribute: the fintech from Recife, Zro Bank, in partnership with the voluntary work movement Transforma Brasil, is receiving bitcoin donations from anywhere on the planet. In addition, Smartpay joined the action for donations in Tether-TRC20 and Tron.
The funds raised by Zro Bank will be allocated to a portfolio of the Pernambuco NGO Novo Jeito, which has been operating in the state for over 10 years. The bank also accepts transfers via PIX. “We are joining forces, enabling another donation channel for so many families who need these resources to arrive urgently. And blockchain technology will allow transfers to be from anywhere in the world to the Novo Jeito NGO’s account instantly”, explains Edísio Pereira Neto, CEO of Zro Bank.
Smartpay has zeroed fees for these donations, according to Rocelo Lopes, founder and CEO of the payments company. Fintech is responsible for developing the Swapix solution, which uses PIX and Tron’s blockchain to make transactions transparent and fast.
“I would like to call on the cryptocurrency fan community to show our strength in this moment of solidarity and prove to everyone that cryptocurrencies can be a way to democratize access to money, helping people all over the world”, notes Smartpay when announcing the campaign donations.

Fabio Silva, social entrepreneur founder of the NGO Novo Jeito and president of the Transforma Brasil movement, said that “the metropolitan region of Recife suffers its greatest tragedy in the last 50 years. “In this way, we need generosity and solidarity from all the people who can help at this time.”
Launched in September 2020 in Recife, Zro Bank is the first cryptobank or multi-currency bank in the country. In addition to performing the traditional services of a bank, its users can, in the same account, pay and receive in reais or crypto-assets. The digital bank was also the first institution in Brazil to implement, with VISA, cashback in Bitcoin for transactions carried out on its card, a novelty in the loyalty/mileage market in the country.
In addition, it was elected among the 5 largest fintechs in Brazil, in the 100 Open Startups ranking of 2020, it was appointed, in 2021, as one of the most promising startups in finance by the 100 Startups to Watch ranking.
