Ukraine has declared intentions to digitize all of its artwork and historical documents.

This was made known by the President of the Blockchain Association of Ukraine, Michael Chobanian, at Consensus 2022 on Saturday.

Chobanian said  the country is trying to preserve its history, over growing concerns that Russian Forces will target architectural marvels, museums, and other cultural sites.

“Today we are announcing a new project [aimed at] how we can save the DNA of the Ukrainian people, Ukrainian culture, and Ukrainian history,”

“Right now, they are bombing museums, churches, and cultural sites. So before they are destroyed…we’re going to digitize every single piece of art or history that we have in museums. We’re going to NFT it and put it on the blockchain,” Chobanian stated.

The initiative is not a government project but an initiative by Ukraine’s Blockchain Community.

Chobanian added that the decision made by the community would prevent the theft of such artifacts by some corrupt politicians who may want to take advantage of the current situation in the country.

Also speaking at the event, The Co-founder of NEAR Protocols, Illia Polosukhin said that project will be partnering with NEAR on the project.

But for Polosukhin, “It’s a national project, not a private project; it’s what we do as the Blockchain Association of Ukraine, and this way no one can delete it,” said Chobanian, who is also the person managing donations for the Crypto Fund of Ukraine and the founder of Ukraine’s Kuna exchange.

According to analytics firm Crystal Blockchain, Ukraine has already used crypto and blockchain to fund its fight against Russia’s invasion, raising over $135 million in crypto from donors all around the world by mid-May.

On a panel titled “Crypto at War: Behind Ukraine’s Historic Crypto Fundraiser,” Chobanian announced the NFT proposal with Alex Bornyakov, Ukraine’s deputy minister in the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the government’s de facto crypto spokesman.
