Brazil will have, as of this Tuesday (7), the first Special Crypto Assets Unit (Crypto). The initiative, by the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT), aims to develop training, manuals and informative actions for the safe use of crypto assets.

The launch of Crypto is the result of a working group created last year by prosecutors, prosecutors and experts in various areas of the crypto ecosystem. In addition to monitoring the technological evolution of the segment and its legal impacts, the group’s idea is to accompany studies on the creation of the digital national currency and its consequences for society.

One of the focus of the group will be the monitoring of scams involving crypto assets, a target of concern for authorities and regulatory agencies around the world. In Brazil, according to a survey by the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) released last year, cryptocurrencies are used in 43% of financial scams. The CVM survey pointed out that the most common victims of these scams are men (91%), who are between 30 and 35 years old (36.5% of the total).

Public Ministry will train Judiciary and police on crypto assets

The Special Cryptoactive Unit will work on the development of training and manuals for the members of the Public Ministry, Judiciary and Police; promote informative actions that guide the population of the DF and the rest of the country on the safe use of crypto-assets; and provide support to MPDFT prosecutors in demands involving the segment.

One of Crypto’s work fronts will also be supporting other Public Prosecutors and Police in actions related to crypto-assets, in addition to managing and operating tools for tracking and monitoring assets on the blockchains eventually used by MPDFT.

Operation Temple Merchants

Even before the arrival of the unit focused on the crypto world, the MPDFT has already given support, in the month of May, to Operation Merchants of the Temple, launched by the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) in conjunction with the Civil Police of Minas Gerais. The action was intended to dismantle a criminal scheme developed in a complex pyramid composition to raise financial resources under the promise of high profits.

According to investigations, members of the criminal organization used faith as the main means of obtaining investors for the alleged financial services they offered. At the time, search and preventive arrest warrants were executed in the Minas Gerais municipalities of Unaí, Belo Horizonte, Contagem and Guanhães, in addition to Belém (PA) and Brasília (DF).
