For those who closely follow the world of agribusiness, talking about pioneering the use of blockchain technology will soon no longer make sense. Just to name a few examples, the Arabyka platform already tracks coffee beans and almonds and SpaceVis starts operating in August tracking the entire bovine lifecycle using blockchain. Another recent initiative comes from the Uisa biorefinery, which will do all the traceability of demerara sugar via blockchain and has already warned that the process will advance to the entire company’s portfolio.

By allowing the automation of control of all activities carried out during production, blockchain provides transparency, efficiency and security to the company’s production chain and its partners.

In the specific case of Uisa’s demerara sugar, consumers will have access to information about the harvest, using geolocation resources. In addition, it will be possible to control the quality of the products, and verify all the certifications that attest to the care taken by the company throughout the cultivation process.

The development of the Uisa solution that involved blockchain was in charge of a cross-functional team made up of technicians from the Technology, Automation and Innovation Board at Uisa, and two more technological partners, Google Cloud and IT Lean, a consultancy specializing in technology.

“We are investing more and more in new technologies such as Blockchain, as we believe in the potential of our customers and we want to help them in the digital transformation process”, reinforces the CEO of IT Lean, Bira Padilha.

Blockchain and evolution

The use of blockchain technology to track production is seen by Uisa as part of the evolution in its forms of production and control, in addition to enabling the tokenization of assets and contributing to the ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) certification processes. English). The company produces food, biofuels, bioenergy and bioproducts.

According to José Fernando Mazuca, CEO of Uisa, with this initiative, the company is interested in greater transparency in its relationship with consumers and society, providing information on the entire production process. “Sustainable posture is increasingly valued by everyone. We believe that with this differential we will attract new consumers to Açúcar Itamarati”, says Mazuca.

The use of blockchain at Uisa starts with the processes that involve demerara sugar, but the implementation of the technology in all the Company’s production lines is already part of the strategy. The planning foresees the use of traceability in external processes, including information on the transport of products, as well as on partners and suppliers.
