Eletrobrás will use blockchain in Procel; open bidding

Eletrobrás will hire an orchestration and solution platform for the development of a permissioned (closed) blockchain network that will be used in the analysis and granting process of the Procel Seal, which shows the energy consumption of equipment and appliances. Thus, the company hopes that blockchain will facilitate data management, reduce costs, speed up the seal granting process, and increase the transparency and auditability of the process.

But, that would be the first step. Once the seal isand adapt to network, new features may beurge, says the company. This would include, for example, certification of new equipment and categories, equipment assessment and life cycle monitoring. and data checks. One of the examples, says the company, is the use of IoT “as sensors integrated into the system for equipment measurements”. As user awareness with demand-side responsive interfaces”.

The Public notice has been open since the 25th. The submission of proposals and documentation must take place until 10 am on March 23 by the government procurement website. And it is on that day and time that the public session begins. In principle, the contract is for 18 months. In addition to the development of the platform, whoever wins must provide technical services for certification of energy efficiency attributes. And that they are “potentially scalable to support the repositioning of the Procel Seal”.

Eletrobrás says that closed blockchain not having an owner is an advantage

Selo Procel data will be on blockchain for greater reliability.

In this case, says Eletrobrás, the permissioned blockchain is the technology “that best meets the needs of the process”. This is because it is fully distributed and thus highly fault tolerant. There is no centralized authority, that is, there is no “owner” of the system, says the company. And other participants can join the network, including the Electric Energy Research Center (Cepel).

In addition, Eletrobrás cites the fact that it is a network only for transactions by legally qualified organizations and with a low entry barrier and scalability. The electric company also lists other points, such as the “impossibility of a registry having conflicting information”, inexistence of a fee for transactions.

The use of blockchain in the energy sector in Brazil and in the world is finding more and more adherents. In Brazil, Furnas has already had more than one public notice calling for blockchain solutions. Projects such as the first organized blockchain branch in the country for energy trading, by AES Brasil and Fohat, are also an example. The project had an investment of R$ 3.4 million from AES within the R&D program of the sector’s regulatory agency, Aneel. The agency establishes that a percentage of the companies’ revenues must go to R&D.
