Universidad Católica Andrés Bello de Venezuela incorporates Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies as compulsory subjects


The technology blockchain or “chain of blocks”, as it is also often called, has brought greater interest from different academic houses worldwidel as an alternative for institutional adoption, due to the wide range of applications it offers from the perspective of the design of socio-productive, autonomous and sustainable initiatives.

In the particular case of UCAB, Andrés Bello Catholic University of Venezuela, opens their spaces for the study of this disruptive technology incorporating subjects and courses within their careers. However, the university has been offering this type of training to its students as an option for some time.

As of the October 2021-February 2022 semester, the changes to the curricular network approved in July 2021 come into effect in some careers, such as Business Administration, Common Subjects and Public Accounting, the latter being, where they are mostly incorporated into their pensum of studies subjects focused on generating greater knowledge about blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies, oriented within economics and related disciplines.

Facing the future

Subjects such as, blockchain and crypto assets, cryptocurrencies, fintech, among others, are some of the chairs that will be taught on a compulsory basis during the career at the university center. In the particular case of The blockchain and crypto-assets subject, from the October 2021-February 2022 school period, went from being an elective to a compulsory subject in the first semester of the degree.

For its part, the subject related to cryptocurrencies was incorporated as a compulsory subject in the 3rd semester, with the consideration that those students who have passed all the subjects present in the curriculum until the 2nd semester, will be exempt from taking. Likewise, the fintech discipline, incorporated in the 5th semester, will have the same consideration as the previous one. Those students who have passed all the required subjects in the syllabus up to the 4th semester will be exonerated from taking it.

In this sense, the Venezuelan study house, from these subjects, proposes to generate a space for analysis and discussion of the market reinforcing general competences of the UCAB and the competence related to emerging economies.

Likewise, it aims to give a practical approach to students, which aims to integrate key concepts of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies, their operation, applications, advantages, among others, which will give them access to knowledge to develop the skills and abilities that integrate the professional human talent with experiences based on blockchain.

Recently, for example, a group of thesis students from the UCAB School of Computer Engineering, devised an application based on blockchain technology that organizes and provides all the stages of a voting process, VoteLedger. This model was designed for the management and electoral registers for university elections, and could be used for elections of any kind and reveals the incorporation of blockchain technology in any sector.

In the case of university experience, blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies have given way to a large number of courses, talks and forums offered by some academics who have decided to adopt it., in order to study and put into practice the possible development of exploratory experiences of this new era and economy digital.
