Sao Paulo Futebol Clube (SPFC) became the first Brazilian football giant to accept cryptocurrencies as a means of paying for tickets, information announced by the São Paulo team last Wednesday night (25). What is the product of a partnership between Tricolor do Morumbi and cryptocurrency exchange Bitso, sponsor of the team.
São Paulo’s executive marketing director, Eduardo Toni, qualified the new payment method as a way to make cryptocurrencies more accessible and the Morumbi stadium more modern by offering new options to fans.
“We are excited to launch this pioneering initiative and offer an innovative experience to São Paulo. Being the first club in Brazil to bring more modernization, freedom and accessibility to fans, through cryptocurrencies, fills us with pride and joy. São Paulo has always had innovation in its DNA,” he said.
The new payment option is released and is valid for games in which São Paulo is the home team, in Morumbi or another stadium. The cryptocurrencies announced for the purchase of tickets are Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), the Ether (ETH), the Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), the Shiba Inu (SHIB) and five US dollar-backed stablecoins: GUSD, USDCUSDP, SO and BUSD.
For now, the option of paying tickets with cryptocurrency is exclusive to registered supporters who have received the program’s membership card, but the club added that the expectation is that access will soon be released to other fans. .
“Opening up to São Paulo fans the possibility to buy tickets for the matches of their favorite team with cryptocurrencies was one of our main goals since the beginning of the partnership with the club. Being able to make this service available for the first time in Brazil represents an important step in Bitso’s mission to make cryptocurrencies more accessible and useful in people’s daily lives, promoting more freedom and financial inclusion for Brazilians”, said Bitso’s Marketing Director in Brazil, Antonio Mota
The first fan in Brazil chose Bitcoin to purchase the ticket with crypto, since the system is already up and running. The historic moment yielded a gift to the buyer, a non-fungible token (NFT) representative of the first ticket in the country purchased with cryptocurrency.
The ticket purchase procedure through cryptocurrencies by São Paulo supporters follows the same purchase process through the club’s partner website in marketing, Total Acesso. Which requires registration as a member of the Fan Partner program and selection of the cryptocurrency payment option.
São Paulo’s announcement comes less than six months after the conclusion of a three-year sponsorship contract with Bitso, an agreement that was announced in early January during an open press conference, as reported by the Cointelegraph Brazil.
