Brazilian producer uses blockchain technology for traceability in the export of coffee bags

Coffee is much more than a bean, or a drink, in the life of agronomist Anderson Mitsuhiro Minamihara, because coffee is intertwined with the very history of the person responsible for the farm that bears the surname of the family of Japanese immigrants and that became the coffee brand, Minamihara, produced in Franca (SP).

Mr. Minamihara, who belongs to the fourth generation of farmers, has just written another page in the history of organic coffee produced on the farm, with the difference that, this time, the dashed lines have given way to algorithms. This is because the producer closed a partnership with startup, Arabyka, from Londrina (PR), developer of traceability through blockchain technology, which was used in nine bags of Minamihara’s organic coffee exported to the Japan on the 16th.

The partnership between Anderson Minamihara and Arabyka is part of a work by the Cocriagro hub, of which the startup is a part of, focused on open innovation. The operation, until reaching the hands of UCC (Ueshima Coffe Corporation) also has the guidance and collaboration of trading Cafebras.

For the hub’s head of innovation, Tatiana Fiuza, the connection between startups and producers represents an important step for Brazilian agribusiness to strengthen, especially in international markets.

When talking about the exported beans, the producer explained that the batch is special, because it can reach 90 points in the classification of the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association), which establishes 11 evaluation items responsible for the score, from zero to 100, with the from 80 the coffee is considered special.

“This first batch, of nine bags, is using 100% Arabyka blockchain technology, which will present information such as time and type of harvest, drying, batch, variety, rest time, day and export pattern. The other members of the chain, such as roasters and coffee shops, can also enter their information during the sales process, until reaching the final consumer”, clarified the producer.

Minamihara coffee production is organically managed and takes place in an area of 100 hectares shaded by avocado trees.

Coffee also stimulated the appreciation of a cryptocurrency developed by entrepreneurs from the south of Minas, Coffee Coin (COFBR), which in February this year recorded a 93% appreciation in 12 months, as reported by the Cointelegraph Brazil.
