Marielle Franco and Elza Soares are iconic women of contemporary Brazil. Both literally dedicated their lives to making this country a better place. The first through political activism in defense of minorities, against the injustices of a patriarchal and unequal society. The second through Brazilian popular music, the cultural expression for which the country is most internationally recognized.

Thus, it is symbolic that iconic images of both became the first two pieces sold through the charity auction “Impact Women Charity NFT”, organized by Dorare, a Brazilian fintech specialized in fundraising for projects and philanthropic organizations. Marielle’s NFT contains exclusive content that can only be accessed by the owner of the non-fungible token.

The funds raised by the collection will go to women-led NGOs and social projects dedicated to women, including the Marielle Franco Institute, an institution created by the former councilor’s family to preserve Marielle’s memory and legacy.

In addition to Marielle and Elza, another 18 women were portrayed by award-winning illustrator Manu Cunhas. Among them were the painters Tarsila do Amaral and Frida Kahlo, the revolutionaries Joana D’Arc and Anita Garibaldi, and other historical personalities.

The pieces have a minimum price of 0.05 ETH (approximately BRL 700) and the auction ends on May 31. The NFTs are also displayed in a virtual gallery in the metaverse open to the public.

Despite claims that the NFTs market is pulling back in 2022, following the broader cryptocurrency price action, the launch of Yuga Labs’ Otherside metaverse virtual lands has driven a 200% growth in the volume of non-fungible tokens traded in the last seven days which reached $1.3 billion, as Cointelegraph Brasil recently reported.
