The mayor of La Molina in Lima, Peru, recently announced that it has already launched the MoliCon program. An initiative whose purpose is to avoid tax evasion and the promotion of payments with Bitcoin (BTC) and digital currencies to businesses in the area. This was reported in a television interview published by Willax Telvision, Mayor Álvaro Paz de la Barra.

The initiative of the MoliCoin program has been adopted so far by ten local restaurants, and according to the television network, it is estimated that by the end of the year, at least 500 more establishments will join this initiative.

According to the statement issued by the Mayor’s Office, the proposal will offer “answers” to establishments on how to carry out payment operations in bitcoin and/or other cryptocurrencies.

In addition, they also pointed out that it is recommended to use wallets that incorporate the Lightning network (LN for its acronym in English), which allow transactions to be carried out instantly and with low commissions.

“The MoliCoin program will provide answers on how a restaurant or business can take payments in bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies, the correct choice and use of a wallet and various advice”, they highlighted.

Mayor Álvaro Paz de la Barra stated that: “Physical currency breeds corruption; digital currency doesn’t. We are paying with bitcoin, with a wallet, so as not to evade taxes. That’s what we want”.

He also stated that he considers it important to bring digital currencies closer to society, he also expressed his conviction “in this new way of paying for goods and services around the world” and highlighted the promise to continue, as a local government, promoting innovations, since, “Peru deserves to be a focus of innovation at the Latin America”.

For his part, Jorge Reátegui Reátegui, manager of Economic Development and Private Investment of La Molina, gave his point of view on the MoliCoin initiative, noting that “We see cryptocurrencies as a powerful strategy and through wallets we can promote commercial transactions of local businesses in our district. The adoption of cryptocurrencies as a form of payment will be inevitable. We will spread even more what decentralized technology really does”, Reategui explained.
